Background: Post-laparotomy pain can impair mobility, comfort, and recovery. Finger-hold relaxation is a complementary nursing intervention intended to reduce pain and support patient participation in pain self-management.

Purpose: To describe the application of finger-hold relaxation for post-laparotomy pain in a patient with bowel obstruction caused by a rectal tumor.

Method: This descriptive case study involved one post-laparotomy patient in Ar-Royan Ward, PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital. Finger-hold relaxation was performed twice daily for three days alongside routine pharmacological treatment. Data were collected through interviews, observation, physical examination, and medical-record review. Pain was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and data were analyzed descriptively.

Results: By the third day, the patient's pain score decreased from NRS 6 to 4. Facial grimacing and restlessness decreased, heart rate declined, sleep quality improved, and the patient became able to perform finger-hold relaxation independently.

Conclusion: Finger-hold relaxation may be a practical, low-risk complementary nursing intervention to support postoperative pain control and patient autonomy during recovery.
