Background: Patients may have limited understanding of general anesthesia when education relies on verbal explanations alone. Education cards provide concise, structured visual information.

Purpose: This study examined the effect of education cards on patients’ understanding of general anesthesia procedures in the Surgical Ward of RS PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. A quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involved 33 preoperative patients selected through accidental sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.

Results: Before the intervention, 69.7% of respondents were in the not understanding category, with a median score of 18.75%. After the intervention, 90.9% reached the very good understanding category, and the median score increased to 87.50%. The Wilcoxon test yielded Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: Education cards significantly improved patients’ understanding of general anesthesia procedures. Future studies may examine preoperative anxiety and postoperative satisfaction and develop digital versions of the media.
